Pastel Hair Dye DIY

HOW TO GET YUMMY HAIR CANDY!!

What's the hottest trend for lovely locks now??

PASTEL, & more pastel hair colors. It's the biggest trend for sexy, fun locks. From pale whites to salmon pinks and sky blues, pastel dye is what's hot right now. From ombre styles to full-head coverage! The BIGGEST trend, is the infamous Lilac! Lilac hair colour has been seen on countless celebrities, like Amanda Bynes, Kelly Osbourne and the Olsen twins, and many fresh faces today. So, how did this trend come about? Mixing a tad bit of colored hair dye with tons of conditioner and applying it to bleached blonde/white hair.  Well, I'll tell you how you can get it step by step! So GO pastel, and unleash your inner sexy! These colors are ultra feminine! soft, and innocent yet mysterious and sexy. So unique! Get the same results as the celebrities!

STEP 1 TO PASTEL HAIR:

Gather all the supplies you'll need listed down below.
1. Hair Dye! (Splat, Manic Panic, or permanent dye.)
2. A bottle of WHITE conditioner.
3. A medium sized mixing bowl.
4. Hair dye brushes to apply the dye evenly.
5. Clear gloves.
6. Old T-shirt and towel.
7. If you hair isn't bleached yet, 40 vol. BLEACHING KIT. ( May have to do a few sessions depending on the darkness of your hair. Wait two to three weeks in-between) 30 vol. for lighter hair.
8. Purple toner shampoo for white & silver hair (after bleaching).

STEP 2 TO PASTEL HAIR:

After you've completed the process of bleaching your hair ( assuming that you've read the directions correctly or got your hair bleached professionally at a salon since bleaching WILL damage your hair) you can start mixing together the hair dye color of your choice and the conditioner in the bowl.

1. You want to use MORE conditioner than the hair dye of your choice. (Light hair dye colors are best.) any temporary toner, or conditioner and add about three parts conditioner and 1 1/2 part dye. This tones down the color and makes it pastel. You can do this with ANY color.

2. After mixing your dye, part your hair into four even sections. Put on your gloves, and began applying your dye with your dye brush to each section. Make sure you've fully covered all your hair.

3. If you're using manic panic hair dye ( which has conditioner in it also) , or another temporary dye that won't damage your hair, leave on for at least an hour. Since the dye mix has conditioner in it already, it shouldn't damage hair and you'll want the dye to take well to your hair. Check your hair every once in a while.

4. After about an hour or so, wash off, and add a teeny tiny bit of the dye (if you want to) to your conditioner or shampoo when washing out. This will help to keep the color from fading. Style hair as usual. AND VoilĂ !
You have gorgeous pastel hair!! Work it girl ;)

    1. All volumes of bleach will damage hair. If it's applied correctly, and the hair is healthy is well taken care of (deep condition weekly, hot oil treatments, trims, etc.) then you'll minimize the chances of hair loss. You'll only end up with hair breakage if you keep the bleach on much longer than needed and it isn't applied correctly. Hope this helped!

    1. Depending on whether you use temporary/semi-permanent hair dye or permanent hair dye, that will determine if the color will be temporary or permanent :) If you are using semi-permanent hair dyes like Splat, Manic Panic, or Directions then the color will eventually fade. But honestly, I'd buy a second set of hair extensions to dye! (Just in case) Although you can use bleach to rid the hair of the lilac and dye blonde again.

    2. How do you get the effect of it blending into another color like the picture from lilac to the light blue

    3. That would be done by doing an "Ombre" or "Dip-dyeing" your extensions or hair. I would suggest you research more on how-to ombre or dip-dye hair, or ask/set up an appointment with a beautician at your local salon! Thanks for reading, I appreciate it! (:

    4. But the reason why I would buy another set of extensions rather than re-bleaching an already dyed set to change the color is because I wouldn't suggest bleaching a set of extensions more than once to keep them in good shape and avoid stripping the hair off. It's better to buy the extensions in Platinum Blond or a light color so the dye will take well to the hair. Once you've dyed it, I wouldn't suggest bleaching the color out to redye it again or multiple times, as this may damage your extensions. I always buy 2 sets to avoid re-bleaching! Just a little personal tip :)

  4. That's a really neat way to get extensions in whatever colour you need. Most of the pre-coloured extensions aren't great qulaity, this way you can buy good quality blonde extensions and get them the exact colour you want.

    Love it :-)

  6. Oh, yes! I’m so happy to find your blog since I’ve been dying to have bubblegum pink hair. Thanks for these wonderful DIY instructions! About the bleaching, I know it’s going to be harsh on our hair, but the least we can do is to keep our hair moisturized and eat foods with omega-3 (that means lots of fish!). Doing this will keep our hair healthy while sporting this pretty style.

  11. If I have light blond hair, do I then need to bleach it? Btw fantastic blog!

    1. No, you do not necessarily need to bleach your hair since it will take the pastel colored dye well because it is already very light. You can still follow all the steps, just skip the bleaching process. Unless you want to get your hair to a paler blonde/white, or you'd rather a lighter pastel color for your hair then you could use a very low volume bleach (I'd recommend 10 vol.) and follow the steps & so on! Remember, I'd still recommend for anyone to see a professional hairstylist when dealing with chemicals & their hair. Good luck to you!

  14. Hey, this is a great idea. If I buy a permanent dye by garnier/loreal for example in a plum colour and add the conditioner, I'm guessing this would last until regrowth? Also could you use a white semi permanent dye to get this effect?

    1. Thanks! Yes, exactly. Yes and the toner should help to achieve a white color hair-do. I hope this helped you! (:

    1. do not condition if you are bleaching the imediately dying. bleach greasy hair, shampoo, dry, dye
      :)

    2. after bleaching shampoo but do not condition then dry then dye. Just color and conditioner together, no peroxide.

    3. You do not need peroxide added to the coloring, only conditioner. You only shampoo and condition hair after you've applied and completed the bleaching process to wash out the bleach. Do not shampoo or condition beforehand. I hope the steps I provided help you, thank you for reading! I hope this helped you! Good luck on your hair journey ;)
